Painting Pet Portraits, is like being with you best friend, eventually you get to know all their hair! -Wendy Bill

Baxter

Pet Portrait of BaxterBaxter is a rescue dog.  He is an nineteen years old, part chow and golden retriever. He has a gift like no other. He has the ability to calm and comfort people who are in their last stages of life. He volunteers at San Diego Hospice. His owner was inspired by his delicate demeanor so much that she has written a book titled, Moments with Baxter.

I met Baxter in front of Frogs gym one day, as he was lying in his mobile bed. My first impression of him was that he was very special and had a face I would never forget.  As an artist, I look for special characteristics in animals and capture them on canvas.  I just knew I had to paint Baxter.  As I painted him and created his facial expressions, I knew I had them when he resembled a teddy bear, his eyes sparkled and the fur strokes were as soft as cotton.

This dog portrait was painted from a photo given to Wendy by Melissa Joseph, owner and family of Baxter who adopted him right before he was to be euthanized when he was only two years old.

On October 16, 2009,  Baxter passed away. He will never be forgotten.  He was truely a wonder,  his spirit will live on in many hearts. I will miss him.
